EAST COAST PIER & WHARF CONSTRUCTION
Coastal Marine Construction builds commercial-grade piers and wharfs for municipalities, transportation departments, and private owners.
We self-perform the structural, concrete, and marine scope from foundation to finish, giving GCs one point of accountability for the entire project.
THE FULL SCOPE.
SELF-PERFORMED.

PLANNED
AROUND THE WATER.
Pier and wharf projects combine several disciplines under one job: pile driving, structural steel, concrete forming and pouring, rebar, and often dredging or bulkhead work. Coastal Marine Construction is currently rebuilding and expanding Leonard’s Wharf in New Bedford, a project that includes bulkhead installation, dredging, backfill and compaction, and a fendering and utility upgrade, all self-performed under our crew. That kind of full-scope capability means fewer coordination gaps between trades and fewer opportunities for schedule slippage.
Our process starts in pre-construction, where we work through engineering specifications, permitting requirements, and site logistics before mobilizing. Construction typically moves through foundation work (piling, sheet piles, or cofferdams as needed), structural framing, decking, and utility installation, all sequenced by our own team rather than handed off between separate specialty subs. Throughout the project, we work directly with owners and engineers to resolve field conditions as they arise, keeping the job moving instead of pausing for change-order negotiations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between a pier and a wharf?
A pier extends perpendicular from the shoreline into the water, while a wharf runs parallel to the shoreline. Both provide docking and loading infrastructure, and Coastal Marine Construction builds both to commercial-grade specifications.
What materials are used in pier and wharf construction?
Piers and wharfs can be built with timber, concrete, or structural steel, depending on load requirements, environmental conditions, and the intended use of the structure.
How long does it take to build a commercial pier or wharf?
Timelines vary based on scope, but projects involving dredging, bulkhead work, and utility upgrades, like Coastal Marine Construction’s Leonard’s Wharf project, can run over a year from mobilization to completion.
Does Coastal Marine Construction handle dredging as part of pier and wharf projects?
Yes. Dredging, backfill, and compaction are part of the self-performed scope Coastal Marine Construction provides on pier and wharf reconstruction and expansion projects.
Who typically owns pier and wharf projects?
Municipalities, port authorities, transportation departments, and private waterfront owners typically own these projects, often working through a general contractor who subcontracts the marine scope to a specialist like Coastal Marine Construction.
What is fendering, and why does it matter for wharf construction?
Fendering systems protect both the vessel and the wharf structure during docking by absorbing impact. Coastal Marine Construction installs fendering systems as part of pier and wharf builds and upgrades.
